Both specs of the CPU and motherboard allow the max ram to be 24gb but can only find support online for 12gb. I checked the inside and it is an Asus MB with 6 ram slots. 3 are being used and I have 6gb currently.
Any input or ideas??? Can I upgrade to 24gb? Where is the limitation?

@ Knotts... Yes I have an Alienware 51 X58 which has the RoG Rampage II Extreme MB with 6 240 pin DDR3 slots. AIDA64 reports that each slot is capable of 4gb each.
For the others. I do 3D animation and design as well as some video editing, so the more ram the better. True that not all apps can use that much at once, but the real performance increase comes when you are multitasking and have a couple 3D and video apps open at the same time. The speed and capacity of ram, both have their seperate benefits.
Think I will get the 24gb set and see what happens :)

How old is it? This sounds like a new thing(a recent change in hardware) and may very well be the reason you cannot find anything online about it. But I will say that if it is an X58 with 6 dimm slots you should be able to find memory for it on Newegg. The i7 will support it, and if you have 6 slots, the mobo will support it. The only limitation you should experience will be your version of Windows. If you are running Windows 7 Home Premium you can only run 16gb. You have to upgrade to Pro or Ultimate for Windows to support 24gb. I will have to do some research to tell you more...and I'll be back.
It's the old one.
The Area 51 x58 is the older Area 51 that was being sold. Since it was the first one with the then new x58 chipset they called it the Area 51 x58. When it was redesigned they dropped the x58 from the name.
The Area 51 now being sold has 3 memory slots because when Dell first released the system instead of making a new motherboard to go with it they used the XPS 730x motherboard which only has 3 DIMMs. This is known as the version 1 board. If you bought one around march of 2010 or later there is a chance you have the version 2 board which has the Alienware logo's on it.
